Any colour you like

"Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it."
-- Ann Landers

We human beings are natural clingers. We seek comfort in the knowledge of the familiar. While it is a popular and definitely true that success comes to those who hold on, long after others have given up, there are also times, when you may simply be hanging on because it is a safer, more convenient option than accepting the truth. Contradictory? Yes and no. While on a superficial level it is all but possible that a ‘formula’ or a strategy that worked at a given point of time be undertaken again and again, for success, the truth is seldom as simple. Holding on can get you success at certain times, but it can also thwart your success. Holding on may, in most cases, get you what you have been trying to achieve, so desperately, but it can also blind you from what could possibly be bigger and better things that may be waiting right at your doorstep. It’s the classic case of settling for the “good”, when there is the “best” waiting for you.

Sometimes, some of us hold on, simply because we are afraid of the unknown, clinging on to the known, the safe waters is the easiest option. Some hold on, because they cannot give up on something- anything! And sometimes, and this is the hardest, we cling on because we truly, with all our heart, believe that it will work out. This is the hardest, because, despite our best intentions, we refuse to read the writing on the wall; we prefer to not understand that this will not work out. Hard to be in this situation, when hope is all that we have and yet it seems like the best option – better than the unknown.

And then, there is the other side – the side which prefers to give up all so easily. You haven’t met those? The ones who would rather look the other way because this is too much stress or because this is too demanding. The ones who would much rather walk away from a relationship or a situation than hang in there or try and work it out. Got what i mean? The ones who believe in finding a new path where they see a curve in the current one. Don’t get me wrong, while our traditional values will scream that this is a very shallow and superficial manner in facing a situation, truth remains that some of these “walk-aways” have been the brains behind a few inventions in history and even the less famous of these “walk-aways” live happy lives as they believe they have chosen the best lives, without waiting and struggling for the good to show up! Makes sense?

So how does one choose? How does one understand the key to this discretion? Of the eternal balance between holding on or letting go? While there may be no right answers to these, there sure could be certain pointers. Given that most choices are half chances and that the success rate, no matter what you do, will always be a good 50%, there remain no right or wrong answers and definitely no generalisations. Priorities differ, expectations differ, attitudes and perceptions differ. But what remains is the power of choice. Most of us have te right to make a choice- to hold on or to let go. What we forget is that we can choose and that making a conscious, aware and discrete choice with responsibility is what seperates a successful choice from the rest.

After all, as is said: “Life is the sum of all your choices.” --Albert Camus

Have a choicest life ahead!

P.S: i am not selling anything – ANYTHING and neither preaching. Just thinking aloud.

For the love of the 'B' Word!

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."
-- Marcus Tullius Cicero

Truer words have seldom been spoken. Being an innate bookworm, I find it rather hard to digest when I hear people say that they don’t enjoy reading or are not too fond of books. Given a chance, i would like to believe that most of them are closet readers; but knowing that the reality is far from the same, my next bet would be to shake them hard and ask – are you mad?

I, for most part, just cannot imagine a life without books! The best memories of my childhood have revolved around me reading, from English textbooks to Tinkle, Chandamama and Amar Chitra Katha. Books were my refuge! They gave me siblings i wish i had, entertained me to bits on days, when my parents were busy with life, gave me friends, i knew i never had! They made me feel much cooler about myself than i may have actually been. I was never an outdoorsy person, and books complemented my nature completely.  Most evenings i would be holed up with a book in a corner, waiting for my dad to come, when my mom would literally push (yes, you heard it right, push!) me out of the house to go play! Boy, would i be one pissed kid who would march off, only to return a couple of minutes later under the pretext of being thirsty or having to visit the restroom. Nothing would make me ‘play a game’ over reading! My mom tried her best, but soon gave up all hopes of encouraging me to do anything requiring any kind of physical activity. (But that’s another post)

So books it were! My companions, my friends, my besties! While Alice in Wonderland was completely relatable, as I had an imagination as vivid as hers, Nancy Drew was the coolest girl i knew. The Malory Towers tales made me secretly wish for schooling in a hostel. Life in these books was beautiful, neat and eventful. While my school life was full of Enid Blyton and the World and Childcraft series, my college life introduced me to P. G. Wodehouse. Yes, possibly this introduction was a little later in the day, than what most children start reading it, but it was my pleasure, nevertheless! What a brilliant author! My fascination for reading improved tremendously in college, thanks to a very well stocked and vibrant college library, which housed classics and contemporary alike. So Wodehouse, Dickens, Laxman, Arundhati Roy and Jhumpa Lahiri were all lapped up in equal measure. Here again, most of my friend circle preferred Sidney Sheldon (and boy, was he a rage!), i fell in love with Archer’s Kane and Abel. While completing my CS, John Grisham became my preferred author. His usage of legalese was something that I could increasingly relate to and which made his books very interesting.

My love story with the books continued long after i completed my graduation and professional studies. With the increasing exposure to management and economic books, non-fiction became the new “cool” thing that caught my fancy. Sure, it made me a “geek” overnight, but non-fiction brings with it, a charm and with the right amount of inquisitive mind, it can get you to think and see things and situations in a manner, erstwhile rarely perceived. Books made my life interesting.

And then i met H. I love H, and one of the things which made me gape in awe of him, was his interest and command over some brilliant economic and non-fiction writers. Ofcourse, later he told me, that he wouldn’t be able to complete an Atlas Shrugged (by my absolute favourite author – Ayn Rand) or a Ken Follet, he could read possibly every non-fiction book there could be around. Oh, also additional marks were given for our mutual distaste of CB Novels and all those new-age English authors, which both of us find extremely childish and boring.  Some of our best dates have included coffee shops, bookstores (how i absolutely love them) and books. The most romantic thing he has done for me, prior to our marriage also involved a book!

Anyways, before i digress again, books have always played an extremely important part of my life. They have been the one thing which keep me going, which provide me with space when i want to escape from the realities of life, yet sometimes they are the ones which give me the strength to accept certain inalienable truths.

I think the entire process of my attachment to reading began, with a certain incident in Bangalore. My family was vacationing at a relatives home and I was in the first standard (age 5). I managed to read the entire headline of the TOI at one stretch, and boy, were my parents proud! I don’t remember anything else that gave me as much happiness as that moment did. They were beaming, tortured me to read it a couple of more times, in front of all relatives, et all (the typical shin-dig!) and that was encouragement enough – after all, i was the coolest kid on earth! (at least in my head).

This journey i believe is going to be a never ending one. Within 2 months of shifting to my new home, i have already created a stack full of books (Thanks to the Crossword sale) and discovered some wonderful authors (Haruki Murakami – wonderful and beautiful – together!!). Seems like, finally, someday, the dream of having a library of my  own, would be true!

P.S: I never lend, so don’t even ask.
P. P. S: I don’t buy the pirated editions either, so yes, this hobby does leave my husband feeling a little lighter! I tell him, this is a substitute for exercising :-P

The C Word!

"Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will."

- Zig Ziglar

change can be seen as exit from one phase and entry into another

If only this was as easy to follow :) Life is full of uncertainties and chances, and yet, we try and cling to the certain and assured things. When change beckons, logic and planning go out of the window. Any change which upsets the flow of things, any change which creates any ripples is looked at with such fear. Any reasoning and composure we may have built in any given situation, is replaced with anxiety and panic. But in hindsight, most of the changes are more than necessary, mostly what we fear is not the change itself, but the lack of confidence in ourselves to make the best of whatever the change will bring. Despite all the stagger of confidence that we build around ourselves and in-spite of all the beliefs and values we strive for, which have led us to where we are, why do we still get afraid of the darkness that the future holds? Why do we still not trust the Hand that guides us and sees us through? Why do we prefer to accept everything with a pinch of salt, rather than with a positive note? Why do we choose to believe in the worst?

Who knows, for all of the stress we take, we could just sit back and laugh at our foolishness, 20 years hence.

Or there might not be anything left of "we" 20 years hence ...

But that's another story!

Introducing "H"

On being chided by me, for being obsessed about a CNBC report on the weakening rupee than about his wife –

He (taking me in his arms): Tu-chi migel Rupee ani tu-chi migel Dollar nhave !
(Roughly translated into You only are my Rupee and you are my Dollar, na!)

Me: !!!!!

And that I believe to be the “best” compliment to have been received from him. Not that he doesn’t say nice, romantic and sugary stuff, in fact sometimes more than necessary (but am not complaining), but for a person who has spent last 10 years mastering Risk Assessment in Foreign Exchange Markets, this line means a lot more than what I, a laywoman would understand.

Who is he, you ask? Oh, let me introduce you to my husband. Yes, i got married on November 14, 2011. In 2 days i celebrate my first month of marriage and the journey so far has been simply beautiful.

Without boring everyone on the details of who, what, when, why, where and how, I’ll simply state some random facts about H (yea, that’s what i call him) –
  • He is a complete sports freak, I have had no connection with sports in my last seven lives.

  • The most romantic thing he’s done for me would be scourging for a impossible to obtain copy of Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy :)

  • He is a happy and sunshine-ish person (touchwood) with a serious face, whereas despite that entire Colgate smile plastered on me, i can get dark and twisted inside. He’s helped me brighten those gaps :)

  • He is not like any other person I have met till date – Calm, collected and Intelligent. I never knew that any person could be this calm and steady. Diametrically opposite to my wavering, moody and temperamental emotional nature. His steady nature, holds me together. :)

  • while he comes from a family of three boys, I come from a family, where the number of women outweigh the number of men, by a good measure. This reflects widely in the nature of our approach and conversations – while he is to-the-point, matter-of-fact sort of a person who’ll believe in being practical and working towards solutions, I am the sort who delves into emotions, tries to understand the cause and thinking behind events and people, rather than results. Our conversations end up being rather hilarious. :)

  • He is a people-oriented fun person who talks less, while I am more of an anti-social pretentious snob who talks a lot. Ironic? That’s how we are.
That's us! :D

As different as chalk and cheese, nay? Not really. What we really bonded on, were the things that actually matter and are unlikely to change in the future – things like our values, vision for the future, attitude towards life and people, love of philanthropy and travelling.  He is a wonderful husband and I can’t help but thank my stars for helping me make the correct decision of saying a yes to him. Should I have had to do it all over again, I would have still made the same decision.
(I can very well imagine H’s blushing face as he finishes reading this. FYI, H does not really like the topics I write, says it’s too dark and unhappy. Hope you’ll enjoy this one, dear!)

So, that’s what’s kept me out of action for the whole of last 6 odd months from the blogosphere (am not talking of the laziness and writer’s block here, am i?) and life’s pretty much changed to a large extent. The change has been a wonderful opportunity to let go of the old and welcome the new, but it’s a change nevertheless. Crossing my fingers to see how it goes.

My parting shot – marriage with the right person, is totally worth it! More on the entire experience, later!

I would like to end this post with the lines from Celine Dion’s song I’m Alive

That I'll be the one standing by
Through good and through trying times
And it's only begun
I can't wait for the rest of my life

In fact, go hear the entire song, it’s just beautiful and apt! :D

Oh, by the way, totally want to say, the inspiration for this post is from Tejaswini and Purnima’s recent posts, got me all mushy and happy to share. You Go Girls!!

But he did not speak

This is my contribution to the Writers Island Prompt "The Secret"

Warning: Slightly long and dark post.

He looked around. The cries, the mourning, the sadness of it all, did not seem to make any sense to him. But he did not speak. He stood staring blankly at the creature that lay before them, draped in white. White is meant to be pure, signify the purity of the soul. He could not get himself to imagine, how the soul of a body so impure could be even remotely considered pure! Oh, if only these people would stop crying, he shuddered. But he did not speak.

Just as he had not spoken then. 20 years back, on that fateful night, when two of the three lives involved had changed inevitably. It was a real dark night. When you’re 12, every night is frightful, but that night was something else. He remembered, being woken up from deep sleep by some voices in the room below. He tiptoed, calling akka. But there was no reply. All he could see was a dim light in the room and all he heard were voices - muffled voices that he quickly recognised. He started banging the door. But the voices only got louder. He heard her scream, pleading for help… he heard him grunt and scold her for being such a ruckus. His voice wasn’t the same, as before. It resembled the voice of an animal now… an animal that would harm anyone and everyone who came in its way. And her voice… who could ever forget that….

A chill ran down his spine. His little heart ran faster than his little feet. He banged the door, with the sole intention of breaking it down. He was not sure, what was happening inside. But something was wrong, very wrong. Akka was in pain, and he had to save her. What would chaachi say, when she returned? Soon his eyes were full of tears and he could barely make sense of anything that was happening around him. All he could remember was that his right arm and shoulder had turned sore by banging the door, so hard. But he did not stop. He was wailing now, almost in unison with the cry of his cousin. But to no avail. Something struck him, he ran out. But the neighbour’s house which was about 5 kms from his was closed. “Ammaaaaaaa…… what do I do now?”… he cried. Where was she, when you needed her the most…. He ran back. He had to do everything to stop this. He continued banging the door. He must have banged all night. The pain got to him, and his little body gave way by dawn.

When his eyes opened next, all he saw was his chaachi sitting next to him, with a hand on her head. Her eyes were red. She smiled sadly, when she saw him awake.

Where is akka?

She drowned herself in the village river… We don’t know how or why it happened…. But he told us, when we returned…

But… his eyes gave way, before he could say anything.

Sssshhhh! You are not to speak of it… we can’t change what happened, can we?... She was our daughter, but we have accepted it too… she tried comforting the child.

But he did not speak.

He went downstairs. He avoided the room, but his tears did not stop. He went to the living room and saw Chacha sit with a hand on his head. He realised that there was nothing he could tell him, which would take away the pain of this father. He looked around. He saw the man, the animal, the devil who had caused the family this. But that person now was smiling in his drunken stupor, to no one in particular. Not a trace of guilt, of the man who had played havoc with so many people’s lives. Nothing! He watched in horror, as the man stood up, walked past him to get wasted. No one said anything. He too did not speak.

The rage in his eyes, in his entire being, made it impossible for him to stand. He went to his favourite spot below the coconut tree to think. That night, he quietly sneaked out of the house with a few of his things and a picture of akka. He passed by his sleeping family members. The man was nowhere in the house. He left home, vowing never to return again. And it was a promise he had maintained for 20 years now. He knew, they would have tried to search him. It was a promise well kept, until that day, when he got a call. It must have been really long, he thought, for he did not recognise the voice at the other end….

He’s died

So ? …

you’re needed… please come…

…. I don’t know…

He heard a click.

But they had waited. By some faith in a bond, that didn’t exist, or for lack of any alternative, they had waited. And he had come back to see this.

The memories were too taxing. Not a day had passed, in all these years, when he didn’t remember the incident in some or the other manner. But standing here, after all these years, looking at the face of the one person, who he had promised to not see was completely overwhelming. He went and sat below the coconut tree.

Unknowingly, the tears started to flow. He had not cried a single day, after that night. But now, he realised, he had no control over them, anymore. It was a cry so violent that no one could have stopped or comforted him. He cried with all his might. He cried till there were no tears left to flow, he felt that every part of his body was participating in this moment, with him. He could have carried this moment with him, for the rest of his life. He cried, even when the tears had dried, because the hatred, rage and pain still remained. It was a curse, he could not wish it away. It would always be there … taunting his existence, asking for its redemption. It was that part of his life, which he had never spoken about, the man and his action was something so shameful, he could never get himself to admit to its existence. The injustice he had been witness to… the things he should have spoken about, but did not speak. He cried.

He heard someone call his name… he looked at the body being carried away. He was needed. It was then, that he realised, that maybe; just maybe, this was his chance to obtain the closure he so desperately sought. This was the chance that he could wish those demons away. Maybe, if this was his opportunity to seek liberation from those ghosts and scars of his existence, he was more than happy to do it. Maybe, he smiled; this was his way of giving justice to akka. He walked towards them. He was ready - ready to smoulder the body of the person, who had given him this, ready to set ablaze the body of the person, whom he once would have called his “Father”.

10 things of '10

The look on my face must have been priceless, for she burst out laughing! Yes, I was surely stumped, by a silly fact when someone told me that 2010 was ending! WHAT… SO SOON! Oh man, just when I was getting used to ending my dates with 10 (pun unintended), it was time to change…. So not fair, I cried!

Well, stupid remarks aside, 2010 has just flown by…. I guess, it’s the same with most good years… and looking back, 2010 has been one of the better ones, for sure :) And like all the people who matter and those who don’t, I have my own views on how the year was, for me!

I have had an O. K. 2009, so when I did look back at the post I did, welcoming 2010 I realized that most of the stuff written in there still holds so true… and most of all, I did actually follow and do a lot of the things I had written in there... well, that’s a first!

So, technically speaking, 2010 was more of learning from 2009 and as happens with most of the “good times” in our lives, we learn little, live a lot and (as happens with me) become even more restless! Sure, I like a good life, but then, it gives you pretty staid topics to blog about, right...especially if you’re blogging after ages and what you write looks rustic)

Cutting short my stupid rambling, here are the things that made 2010 memorable, in no random order…

Laughter: Hell, I have laughed more in this year than the last 2 years together! Don’t get me wrong, my life isn’t that bad, that I remember each time I laughed, but I have surely laughed my head out on so many occasions and with so many different people, that its been an pretty good! :)

Vacation: I have seldom taken a month long vacation, after I began working. Rather, I used to think, I would go crazy if I ever was off work for more than a week… workaholic and all that. Turns out, most of it is bullshit. My entire February was spent in Bangalore. How I fell in love with that city, which had an amazing (though dry) weather and an awesome cake shop! But what really made it the most memorable was the people I was with. Each one of them made it special. The late nights, the dancing, the crazy stuff I can’t squeal here and the amount of food and sweets! Yay!!

But, even after Feb, I have been on these silly short trips more than a couple of times, with different set of people, and it has been amazing every time! Now, I suppose it’s time to get over the laziness quotient and get myself a passport and go international! (Please stop rolling your eyes, guys!)

People: 2010 has been a lot about people! New friends, old acquaintances, and plenty of people somewhere in the middle. Made my share of mistakes, others made their too… but thankfully, sensibilities prevailed! I love it, when people you’ve known in what seems like a previous life & lost touch with, suddenly re-enter your life in a pretty different avatar! It’s like unlearning quite a bit about them and knowing them again! Mostly a pleasure :)

Marriage: Not mine…. Yet! But my close friends, for sure. So many of them got married in ’10 that it could easily be re-christened to be the year of weddings! (Sorry, 2009). And here is an interesting insight… for someone who loathes attending family weddings (unless they are close), I actually had a blast in each of my friend’s weddings! Surprising! Maybe it was the fact that seeing them happy and beaming was contagious… maybe it was coz I was out of option, or maybe it was because of the behind the scenes goss I was a part of… but friends’ marriages were fun!

Arranged Marriage: HA HA HA… I cant believe I am actually writing this, but the entire process of “Arranged Marriage” has pretty much changed me, in a few ways! For starters, it got me to re-look the entire question of “what I want”…. Since I got my answer to “what I don’t want”! At the cost of risking my entire future and sounding stupid, let me say this…. When it comes to these things, instinct wins over logic! By far!!

Work: Bummer, u say?! Hehehe… I love my work and well, it was amazing this year! All the stuff seemed easier to manage, people easier to lead and work more interesting than ever! Hopefully, this is the beginning of an upward curve! Wish I could share most of my work insights here, but I doubt they’d make sense…

Patience: THE VIRTUE to have! Seriously!! I can’t imagine how I could get by life so far without having any of it, and trust me, I lack it big time! But 2010 has definitely made me so much more patient. Sometimes, one needs to have patience for not only oneself but even for others around you. And boy, its hard… really hard! A lot of things make so much more sense over time, and patience makes you a better person!

Ya, this seems to be as much as I could write for now…. Maybe could update this some other time as well! So, people, happy New Year and all that jazz! Hope 2011 is an awesome year… and make sure, you make it awesome… coz you never know, the world might end in 2012! :P

Oh, and just another note to people (not everyone, you know who you are): I am cybernating right now… yep, off web… no emails/ no chat/ no facebook (Deactivated)/ no twitter…. Not for some time… Brining in the new years in a remote place, just the way I want to…. Quietly and at peace…. But, this cybernation may go on for more than that…. (typically me, na!)… So, don’t fret and fume if you don’t hear from me for a while now… Enjoy it, while it lasts ;)

Seriously!

I am not surprised that the novel “Serious Men” won The Hindu Best Fiction Award 2010! After all shouldn't a novel depicting the ‘real’ India be applauded! Even if the novel is through the eyes of a frustrated yet cunning man in our society who believes on being wronged because of his birth in a certain caste! Even if his depiction made me think that every second person walking on Indian streets was deranged. Here was a man, who spoke the truth! Of course he would be awarded!

Never mind the bad spelling, erratic grammar, poor editing and a story which resembles a movie plot; we have to encourage more of such truth inspiring, heart rendering human stories, which show our “real” India and the way we are to everyone! How else would the stark truth come out of our living rooms. How else, would these awe inspiring individuals guide us into light by informing us that Militants and Naxals need a humane touch and that the solution to every problem in our country is through a media trial and that everything would be all right if a certain CM resigns! So

what if their sentences begin with ‘and’ and the comma follows every 2 words like a Hutch puppy. Who needs an English teacher writing our books anyways!

What we need are these free minded, spirited young individuals who are comfortable enough to express their disappointments with the Indian society. Yes, the more the merrier. After all, isn’t that the true barometer of a thriving, intellectual, free and developing democracy? Not to mention that this guidance comes Direct to Home! What more can we as a country ask for. We shall, as a society be ever indebted to these great writers of no caliber but big mouths for letting us know what India is all about.

Thank You Manu Joseph, Ms. Roy and many others. Thank You! (Sorry for getting emotional)

I am not surprised that the novel “Serious Men” won The Hindu Best Fiction Award 2010. What I am surprised about is why it did not win the Best Non-Fiction Award, 2010! Real shame that!

I feel good

(This is my contribution to the Writers Island Prompt # 14 - The Journey)

He jerked as the clock stuck 4:00 p.m.! Six months had passed but the journey from his ‘routine’ to this visit seemed longer than that, very long in fact. It was more like an event of someone else’s distant past. The lack of emotion and the numbness made him smile as he remembered that day.

That fateful day when nothing had seemed different. He had been uneasy, that’s all, but it seemed a case of ‘waking up at the wrong side of the bed’, than an ominous sign of something. But would it have changed anything? He thought not.

It was around 4:00 p.m. when he left work that day. Yes, it was way too early for his standards. But owing to a grumpy mood, he had decided to call it a day. No one seemed to mind. Very few noticed.

It was a beautiful evening, the sky was clear and the breeze was cool and refreshing! He decided to walk back. Life was good, and walking would help him clear his mind and get him back into his usual spirits. Plus, he had ample time today, no rushing home for dinner date, no missing out on TV shows! A half empty day really felt good, he smiled.

He looked up. The sun was on its way home, which made the entire horizon look dark pink. How she loved the colour! He should call her up, he thought. Then he remembered, he was supposed to be angry on her. Life is good, he thought! Bloody Good!! He was humming the James Brown number…. Life seemed to be having everything going for him… why have I been grumpy all day, he chided!

He was at the street corner, when it happened. He just waved at a neighbour and her child. They waved back. How he loved young kids, all innocent and pretty. Life would be a breeze if I was a kid. Maybe someday, I will have some, he thought!

And then he turned, to go to her street. I shall enjoy this, he thought, thinking of how he would make her feel guilty for all their silly fights!... Evil Man, Evil!
And then, out of nowhere, he heard a loud music being played. He turned to see, the smile intact. But before he could comprehend, he was on the floor, unconscious! The loud music was still on…. The drooling mouths and the sloppy eyes at the wheel were still unfazed…. The smile on his face still remained…. But something else was lost….

And a lot was lost, and a lot had changed since then... he sighed. His journey had begun, with the loss of his legs. His life seemed much more, with a body part less. As ironic as it seemed, he had found everything, when he had lost something! Six months had passed and nothing was ever the same again. The pain, the will to live, the need to breathe, the ecstasy of being able to, was much more beautiful and of greater value than anything else he had ever known. He truly felt alive! He could not understand if he felt more alive in the past month, than he had felt in years. But there was one thing he did know, Life, as he knew that day, would never be the same again!

And, somewhere from the window, he heard that James Brown track again…..

[This is for everyone who has ever been a victim of drunk driving! Please guys, do not drink and drive... it's just not cool!]
