But he did not speak

This is my contribution to the Writers Island Prompt "The Secret"

Warning: Slightly long and dark post.

He looked around. The cries, the mourning, the sadness of it all, did not seem to make any sense to him. But he did not speak. He stood staring blankly at the creature that lay before them, draped in white. White is meant to be pure, signify the purity of the soul. He could not get himself to imagine, how the soul of a body so impure could be even remotely considered pure! Oh, if only these people would stop crying, he shuddered. But he did not speak.

Just as he had not spoken then. 20 years back, on that fateful night, when two of the three lives involved had changed inevitably. It was a real dark night. When you’re 12, every night is frightful, but that night was something else. He remembered, being woken up from deep sleep by some voices in the room below. He tiptoed, calling akka. But there was no reply. All he could see was a dim light in the room and all he heard were voices - muffled voices that he quickly recognised. He started banging the door. But the voices only got louder. He heard her scream, pleading for help… he heard him grunt and scold her for being such a ruckus. His voice wasn’t the same, as before. It resembled the voice of an animal now… an animal that would harm anyone and everyone who came in its way. And her voice… who could ever forget that….

A chill ran down his spine. His little heart ran faster than his little feet. He banged the door, with the sole intention of breaking it down. He was not sure, what was happening inside. But something was wrong, very wrong. Akka was in pain, and he had to save her. What would chaachi say, when she returned? Soon his eyes were full of tears and he could barely make sense of anything that was happening around him. All he could remember was that his right arm and shoulder had turned sore by banging the door, so hard. But he did not stop. He was wailing now, almost in unison with the cry of his cousin. But to no avail. Something struck him, he ran out. But the neighbour’s house which was about 5 kms from his was closed. “Ammaaaaaaa…… what do I do now?”… he cried. Where was she, when you needed her the most…. He ran back. He had to do everything to stop this. He continued banging the door. He must have banged all night. The pain got to him, and his little body gave way by dawn.

When his eyes opened next, all he saw was his chaachi sitting next to him, with a hand on her head. Her eyes were red. She smiled sadly, when she saw him awake.

Where is akka?

She drowned herself in the village river… We don’t know how or why it happened…. But he told us, when we returned…

But… his eyes gave way, before he could say anything.

Sssshhhh! You are not to speak of it… we can’t change what happened, can we?... She was our daughter, but we have accepted it too… she tried comforting the child.

But he did not speak.

He went downstairs. He avoided the room, but his tears did not stop. He went to the living room and saw Chacha sit with a hand on his head. He realised that there was nothing he could tell him, which would take away the pain of this father. He looked around. He saw the man, the animal, the devil who had caused the family this. But that person now was smiling in his drunken stupor, to no one in particular. Not a trace of guilt, of the man who had played havoc with so many people’s lives. Nothing! He watched in horror, as the man stood up, walked past him to get wasted. No one said anything. He too did not speak.

The rage in his eyes, in his entire being, made it impossible for him to stand. He went to his favourite spot below the coconut tree to think. That night, he quietly sneaked out of the house with a few of his things and a picture of akka. He passed by his sleeping family members. The man was nowhere in the house. He left home, vowing never to return again. And it was a promise he had maintained for 20 years now. He knew, they would have tried to search him. It was a promise well kept, until that day, when he got a call. It must have been really long, he thought, for he did not recognise the voice at the other end….

He’s died

So ? …

you’re needed… please come…

…. I don’t know…

He heard a click.

But they had waited. By some faith in a bond, that didn’t exist, or for lack of any alternative, they had waited. And he had come back to see this.

The memories were too taxing. Not a day had passed, in all these years, when he didn’t remember the incident in some or the other manner. But standing here, after all these years, looking at the face of the one person, who he had promised to not see was completely overwhelming. He went and sat below the coconut tree.

Unknowingly, the tears started to flow. He had not cried a single day, after that night. But now, he realised, he had no control over them, anymore. It was a cry so violent that no one could have stopped or comforted him. He cried with all his might. He cried till there were no tears left to flow, he felt that every part of his body was participating in this moment, with him. He could have carried this moment with him, for the rest of his life. He cried, even when the tears had dried, because the hatred, rage and pain still remained. It was a curse, he could not wish it away. It would always be there … taunting his existence, asking for its redemption. It was that part of his life, which he had never spoken about, the man and his action was something so shameful, he could never get himself to admit to its existence. The injustice he had been witness to… the things he should have spoken about, but did not speak. He cried.

He heard someone call his name… he looked at the body being carried away. He was needed. It was then, that he realised, that maybe; just maybe, this was his chance to obtain the closure he so desperately sought. This was the chance that he could wish those demons away. Maybe, if this was his opportunity to seek liberation from those ghosts and scars of his existence, he was more than happy to do it. Maybe, he smiled; this was his way of giving justice to akka. He walked towards them. He was ready - ready to smoulder the body of the person, who had given him this, ready to set ablaze the body of the person, whom he once would have called his “Father”.

I feel good

(This is my contribution to the Writers Island Prompt # 14 - The Journey)

He jerked as the clock stuck 4:00 p.m.! Six months had passed but the journey from his ‘routine’ to this visit seemed longer than that, very long in fact. It was more like an event of someone else’s distant past. The lack of emotion and the numbness made him smile as he remembered that day.

That fateful day when nothing had seemed different. He had been uneasy, that’s all, but it seemed a case of ‘waking up at the wrong side of the bed’, than an ominous sign of something. But would it have changed anything? He thought not.

It was around 4:00 p.m. when he left work that day. Yes, it was way too early for his standards. But owing to a grumpy mood, he had decided to call it a day. No one seemed to mind. Very few noticed.

It was a beautiful evening, the sky was clear and the breeze was cool and refreshing! He decided to walk back. Life was good, and walking would help him clear his mind and get him back into his usual spirits. Plus, he had ample time today, no rushing home for dinner date, no missing out on TV shows! A half empty day really felt good, he smiled.

He looked up. The sun was on its way home, which made the entire horizon look dark pink. How she loved the colour! He should call her up, he thought. Then he remembered, he was supposed to be angry on her. Life is good, he thought! Bloody Good!! He was humming the James Brown number…. Life seemed to be having everything going for him… why have I been grumpy all day, he chided!

He was at the street corner, when it happened. He just waved at a neighbour and her child. They waved back. How he loved young kids, all innocent and pretty. Life would be a breeze if I was a kid. Maybe someday, I will have some, he thought!

And then he turned, to go to her street. I shall enjoy this, he thought, thinking of how he would make her feel guilty for all their silly fights!... Evil Man, Evil!
And then, out of nowhere, he heard a loud music being played. He turned to see, the smile intact. But before he could comprehend, he was on the floor, unconscious! The loud music was still on…. The drooling mouths and the sloppy eyes at the wheel were still unfazed…. The smile on his face still remained…. But something else was lost….

And a lot was lost, and a lot had changed since then... he sighed. His journey had begun, with the loss of his legs. His life seemed much more, with a body part less. As ironic as it seemed, he had found everything, when he had lost something! Six months had passed and nothing was ever the same again. The pain, the will to live, the need to breathe, the ecstasy of being able to, was much more beautiful and of greater value than anything else he had ever known. He truly felt alive! He could not understand if he felt more alive in the past month, than he had felt in years. But there was one thing he did know, Life, as he knew that day, would never be the same again!

And, somewhere from the window, he heard that James Brown track again…..

[This is for everyone who has ever been a victim of drunk driving! Please guys, do not drink and drive... it's just not cool!]

Nirvana... Aha!

This is my contribution to the Writers Island Prompt on 'Reunion'

It was an unusual afternoon. She was wilting under the heat. The emptiness of her soul, lay visible to all who saw. It made no difference to her, that there were so many people around, probably staring, many wondering and some even understanding. At that moment, no one and nothing else mattered.

All she could feel was his harsh stare, the reality of him taking away something from her so important. The thought that with every stare of his, a part of her identity vanished was embarrassing her. Every glance of his, made her feel as if there was less and less of her remaining. Her dignity seemed to be vanishing with every passing moment. But she had nowhere to go, nothing she could do to somehow stop it. The helplessness was even more unnerving.

But she held on, she stayed put. She knew, if she could face this humiliation, she would indeed have her moment of glory. In her mind, it was not a case of “will she”… but more a case of “when will she”…. And suddenly she winced. But before that, nothing would remain, she thought…coming back to the harsh reality again!

A few months passed by. Every day seemed a battle for her. The days were long, the times were harsh. Every moment getting her closer to that which was now, inevitable.. There came a day, when nothing was left in her, but still he was there, trying to take whatever remained of her. Trying to make sure that she indeed was dead, and nothing remained. He was always there, she thought. Every day, in and out, he would be there. Suddenly she was comforted by that surety that he would be there when she got back at him.

And then it happened. Her day of redemption, her finale was here. She couldn’t see him. She knew he was there, as always, she smiled again! ‘Fine, hide all you want, but am going to love it today’, she smiled. Aah! the breeze again. The cool and calm breeze! She felt alive and happy. The harsh encounters of the recent months had left her bruised, hurt, empty and black, and now she knew she would be beautiful again! I shall be alive once more, she thought.

Suddenly it got real dark. The clouds made the entire place serene and calm. Their voice drowned everything around. But that voice was music for her, the prelude to a shocking climax. The lightning stuck as if heralding a change, a sweet victory for a ferocious little battle she had played a part in. And it rained!

She leapt at the first few drops of water that fell on her, absorbing it within herself. She wanted to dance, but knew she couldn’t. Her joy knew no bounds. She was once again re-united with the one and the only thing that gave her an identity, that which gave her a purpose, which allowed for her existence…. Her existence of being what she was. She was no longer barren, no longer devoid of water. She looked up and smiled. She knew that all was right for now, until he returns again! She stood calmly in the rain, brushing aside all thoughts, of him, of the battle which would return, of what had happened to her…. Everything! All she knew at that moment was that she was alive, and it was exactly for this, that she existed! Nirvana, she knew would feel just like this. And she smiled.

I treasure

(This is my contribution to the Writer's Island Prompt on Treasure)

I treasure…

You singing me a song, I never wanted to hear,

I doing a little jig, you never wanted to see.

Walking through the hallway I, trying to act important

You giving me a push, and telling me, it didn’t matter.

Awaiting my chance to speak, talk and impress

You giving me a smile saying “you know you are the best!”

Waiting for that magic, the moment that wouldn’t pass

You knew what I felt, knew just where to start…

Sitting at your window, talking about stories of glory

Watching the world go by, over too many cups of tea

Life is nothing but collection of moments such as these
What would I do, if they hadn’t happened to me!

her fantastic love....

(This week's contribution to "Prompt and Link" - Fantasy)

She held him near... His presence was enough for her to be re-assured that all would be right again. That people would not be so rude and disgusted with her presence. She found herself drowning in sleep, in his arms. Afraid he would be hurt, she was about to let go of her embrace, when he smiled. A smile which she knew meant, that he wouldn’t let go of her, no matter what. The comfort of his arms made her even more comfortable. After all, it was a long and tiring day! First, she was made to speak about things and events, she knew were false, and then there were these people…. people who were trying to tell her, that her truth, the only thing she knew to be true, was actually false! She recollected how she felt angry from her guts, and how she had reacted by throwing the stick at them. And now she was, in the arms that meant heaven for her… the place where she found peace, in the arms of the only man, she had ever truly loved… she went to sleep!.......

.....................She opened the door to her mother’s room, to find her sleeping peacefully on the floor, with a worn out jacket, she immediately recognised. After the entire trauma, emotions and the action during the day, finding her mother at such peace, made her feel like a fool! It broke her heart thinking about her state, realising that no matter how much she wanted to let it prevail… she couldn’t allow her own mom to remain in this peace, in this fantasy world of hers, where the reality was obviously missing! She recognised the smile, mom had on her face at that moment, and she wished she could capture it! It was the same smile she would have, whenever she was with Dad… Dad…. The man, she, her mom and all had all lost two years ago!

been a while

(My contribution for this week's Prompt and Link on "Identity")
It’s been a while….

Been a while since I thought of thee,
Your presence, your face, your identity
The way you would have reacted
To each of my daily antics!

Been a while I thought of thee
The reason u left me and flee
The day you chose to keep me here
Was that too tough on you, mother?

Now I call this place my home,
A place where people like me come,
Though all think of me as one,
I know Ma, I am no orphan

You may have loved me, given me birth
But of people there may be a dearth,
Who understood your love for me,
Not letting me have your identity

The thought of you being near
Has always given me comfort, in fear
It sometimes feels so lonely, here
Wish you would take me, sooner than ever

Then I would have a family,
People who would help me see
Amid this whole wide world of theirs,
My own little identity!

Travesty....

(My contribution to this week's prompt and link)

Sitting quietly, I shed a tear
No one near to hold and care
The one I loved the most
Is the one for whom I fear….

She was small, innocent and dear
Her guilt was her prayer
Which they didn’t hear
When they killed her…over and over

That’s my princess there
I thought she was so pretty and rare
But now I sit next to her
Laid like a showpiece none could care

Result of someone’s lust
Her life and my dreams now lay in dust
Put to rest, she must
But should some one have done…..
Something so outrageous

Would she get the justice she deserved…?
Would I get back to my life unreserved...?
Would it ever be the same again…?
None to hold, none to care…
Just coz someone took a dare…
To do something outrageous

Flight to life

(My contribution for this week's Prompt and Link : Flight)
She stood in a corner, and waved at the sky… the tears rolling in her eyes…

One week was all it took for her destiny to change or rather, for LIFE to happen!

They both had applied for the scholarship… he was unsure, she wasn’t! They had made promises, seen dreams, made plans. Plans... huh!! Seemed such a fake word for her now… just like her life at the moment. She had lost two of her most precious things over the past one week… and she knew she would never get them back.

They had met in a study group and with such common aspirations, desires and ambitions; it never surprised anyone that they got together! Two years of dreaming together, promises to be together, irrespective of what the future held for them…. Till the results were announced…

He had made it; she didn’t… it seemed wrong to cry, to be sad… I have to be strong, she assured herself, for him, for them… no matter it was THE reason for her existence… before she had met him, that is…. it wasn’t as if she couldn’t study herethey would still be together, she consoled… and then that meet… how could she forget that moment… Too distracting, did he say or was it too taxing??... Something about moving on and life and future... Never mind, she was way too numbed and lost in a daze to remember anything other than his face, which seemed so hostile, so different, and so unfamiliar! Please understand, he said, she nodded, unable to speak or do anything else… She would

And today when she reached to bid him adieu, she realised something in her must have died, for she wasn’t there for him… she was there to see what she had missed… the other few around, whom she knew, appeared sad… for his departure, and for her loss… but she wasn’t… she had a purpose to be here… they didn’t!

As the others left and he checked in… she waited, for two long hours, she waited, standing by a corner window, watching the activities below, she waited…. And then it was announced… the flight was about to take off… the one which would have carried her to her dreams, her new life, the one in which they would have been together… the one….. She felt a tear down her cheek….

The flight took off… she couldn’t see him, but she could see… the sky, the clouds and the night, all before her eyes…. And she smiled… She stood in that corner, and waved at the sky… the tears still rolling in her eyes… she waved HIM good bye, she waved her UNFULFILLED DREAM good bye…. He was right… she would move on… he wasn’t worth it and neither was life! It was that flight, that would end that phase in her life and begin a new one… she laughed, to herself… for the fact that this flight would still mean a new life… a new chance… a new her!!

Lost Highway

(This is my contribution for prompt and link for lost highway)

It was a cloudy day…..

“Want to go for a walk around??” I asked. “Sure… I guess”... he said “Hmm… yea then…”

We stepped outside… the breeze, the trees, the smell of wet mud, and the two of us, together, yet apart… walking….silence

“Where is this road headed??... Never been here before, I guess” he said, giving me a very confused look.

“Strange… living here for so long, and we thought, we knew every road ahead of us!” I smiled.

“Just like life, I guess….” he nodded

“Hmmm…” I nodded back

We both shared a sheepish grin…. Followed by a silence only we understood.

Suddenly, I turned towards him….

“What if we ever lost each other, on the road of life?” I asked

The recent fights and arguments flashed before my eyes… making me, immediately regret the question.

“I would find my way to you…. And walk with you” he reassured with a big smile on his face…. You?

“I wouldn’t lose you in the first place”…
I whispered….clutching his hand in mine…. For the first time in days!
